Day 39-

Vintage Wicker Bags-

It takes a great vintage bag to make a great summer outfit and there is nothing better than a vintage wicker purse. These are the handbags that my mother carried in the spring and summer and they were her celebration of the passing winter season. They could be purchased just about anywhere in the 50's and 60's, made from wicker, rattan, and sea grass, they were such beautiful bags. Some with leather trim and fabric or vinyl lining. They are plentiful today on apps such as Ebay & Etsy and many thrift and antique stores. They are fun to shop for and there are many interesting versions and styles. The best ones are the mid century designs. They can be found at a great price, from the $20-75 dollar range (and many even less) in all shapes and sizes.

The 1950’s were real breakout years for the straw bag. Ladies who embraced fashion, wanted a hand bag that was fun and could carry their cosmetics and other daily essentials. A smaller more compact version of the large straw beach bag became in high-demand. Wicker and Rattan purses became status symbols for the wealthy yachting crowd in such places as Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod. The bags were coveted for their tight weaves, tops and bottoms made of hardwoods like walnut, and fasteners. At the time the bags were commonly mass produced in British Hong Kong. The brand Coach made the straw purse classy and affordable in their ready to wear collection here in the U.S. Other popular vintage manufacturers were Mr. Jonas, Atlas, Scott NY, Lesco Lona. Etienne Aigner, Simon and John Romain among others.

In a different style, the "Basket Bag" emerged in the 1970's and was made popular by English-French Actress,& Model Jane Birkin, she was photographed on the streets of Paris carrying her woven basket with a pair of slouchy jeans, a white t-shirt and her famous messy hair. Today, an iconic photo.

Vintage wicker bags are back in style today and are not only popular on the beach but for everyday street wear as well. From vintage chic to retro unique; the straw bag continues to make its mark in fashion. The price points are affordable which make them a great collectible. It's no wonder the straw bag is here to stay.
