Day 36-

Our Sunday Drive through I-Town

There is nothing like the beauty of a great neighborhood on a sunny warm Sunday afternoon. The trees are all in bloom with some of the most beautiful flowering trees I have ever seen, the magnolia, apple blossom, crab apple, and stunning white flowers of the pin cherry. Spring in Rochester can't be beat and Irondequoit has some of the best mature trees on the most beautiful streets.

Today we took a drive through one of the most unusual and extraordinary neighborhoods in I-town, Winona Woods. Made up of just under 600 homes off St Paul Blvd, each tree lined and home to some of the most architecturally diverse houses. Many of the homes have stone, brick or field stone on the facade which I find to be quite unique to this area, each one a bit different from the next. These aren't all big houses, they are homes that are livable, warm and inviting and cozy. Homes for everyone.

The neighborhood lies along the edge of the Genesee River, with a park like setting. There are so many trees you might even get lost in the shade of the streets once they are full with foliage. The area is as picturesque as a post card with plenty of green spaces. A great family neighborhood with a well established community association backing it up.

Taking a drive down Winona Blvd is quite a treat, you might even get lost. The road jogs and turns and you might think you have left the street just when it appears again. The road begins at St Paul and continues down to the end where you will make a left turn, to the end then a right turn, another right turn and so on....just follow the street signs, you aren't lost. Take note of the homes as you drive by, it's quite a treat.

In the middle of the neighborhood you will come to a church, yes a church, right in the middle of a quiet residential street, not on a main road where you would most expect it. Another amazing quality of this area. The church is Trinity Communion, small and tucked in it's little nook within the neighborhood. Drive by and take a look it's another architectural wonder within the community. It's red doors seem to welcome you as you drive by. I can imagine it is the church of many in the area.

So take a leisurely drive through the Winona Woods Community. You won't be sorry you did. The neighborhood has that "come as you are" feel which makes it appealing to those lucky to call it home. If you see someone out walking, give a friendly wave and a smile. Remember to drive slowly as this is a family neighborhood, there are plenty of children out walking and riding bikes.
