Day 17-

About 10 years ago a good friend and I went to a garage sale, we went to a lot of garage sales throughout our years of friendship. One particular day I discovered a very large book at one of those sales, it was $3.00 and I had no idea at the time what I would do with that book, but I had to have it. It was heavy and awkward with somewhat yellowed pages and a faded cover but I loved it and I knew, as I did about a lot of things I bought, that eventually I would find a reason and purpose for it. The book sat in a box on a shelf in my closet for a few years then it hit me. I would use the book to save everything in it I loved. Like a scrap book but not really in the usual way. Not for photographs for concert ticket stubs, old birthday cards, but for things that I really loved that maybe someday I wanted to make, or purchase, or reference to decorate or even gardening ideas. Pages from books and magazines discarded, drawings and misc recipes, all in one place.

Well, that was more than 20 years ago and my book is now almost full of the things I love, the things that give me inspiration, the things that keep me creative. I guess I am my daddy's girl. My dad was always making something, painting something, building something or drawing something. He spend countless hours in his workshop with me right beside him, holding a board or being his muse while he painted. I learned so much from him. I guess today we have Pinterest for that, but there is still something about getting out my book and thumbing through the pages that I have glued many things too. It makes me happy. Whether it's a picture from a magazine or a swatch of paint colors or a piece of fabric that might someday be used for a chair, it goes in my book. I've pressed leaves in it, 4 leaf clover and herbs for projects as well. It is a special place for me to keep the things I love.

Some wish for their special belongings, like an heirloom ring or necklace to be passed on to future generations. I wish for my special book to be passed on because that is where the real memories lay. All of my thoughts are on those pages, all of my dreams and feelings, though not in words they are  what has inspired me throughout the years and those are the things that can be cherished always.

Do you have a special place for your treasured things? A special book or a special box?
