Day 29-

A Drive Through Scottsville-

We took a drive along the river today, down Scottsville Road through Scottsville to Garbutt and Mumford. I love this drive. I love the wonderful old time worn cottages that flank the river, many in need of repair, so rough and tumble and they looked even more so on today's gloomy, rainy ride.
The water's of the mighty Genesee were high today and rising from all of the rain. I can't help but think of the worry that those Scottsville Rd residents must have on days like today. As the waters rise they are living with a real threat of damage to their homes and property. Hopefully the river will recede soon and lift the burden from all that live at or near it's banks. I just love this cute little home. Notice the circular side to the right of the door. So unusual.

We kept driving on Scottsville road until we came to the strange house with all of red hearts on it's surrounding fence, The Animals are Angels house, which is apparently a B&B?. I'm not sure if I would stay there? Maybe it's a B&B for pets? The road before the house is called Mile Wood Rd. We could see houses at the end of the road so I was interested. What a mistake! The road itself has the worst potholes I have ever seen. It took us at least 10 minutes to maneuver down the road to the end only to be disappointed by several dilapidated cottage homes. I can't even imagine living there and driving over those crevices everyday. Well, that's what exploring is all about. Poor pooch Trixie was all bumped out by the time we had finally driven out of there. What an adventure it was!

We made it to Scottsville which is one of those quintessential all American towns. Some of the oldest historic homes are located here. The town was settled in 1790 and it's one of the oldest permanent settlements west of the Genesee river. Most notable are the homes on Rochester Street. I can remember bringing the kids here to look at the homes decorated for Christmas. They were lit with candles in each window that illuminated Rochester Street from end to end. We noticed today that a lot of the homes have lost the luster that they once had. Some of the homes have fallen into disrepair which is a very sad to see.

I love this house, it's a little crooked but still well loved.

We kept driving and came to the small hamlet of Garbutt. Some of the oldest homes in the Scottsville, Wheatland area are in this hamlet. The hamlet was named for Zachariah Garbutt, his wife and 5 children emigrated from England in 1798 and settled in Wheatland on the north banks of the Oatka. The hamlet was duly named after him. Three of the Garbutt family homes are still standing. The Garbutt's lived at 866,1008 and 1300 Scottsville-Mumford Rd. I can remember driving through here when I was younger and admiring the Garbutt House Restaurant. They had candles in each window, it was beautiful. Unfortunately before we were able to go there to eat they closed. Does anyone remember the restaurant? I can't find anything about it, it's as if it never existed.

Thank you for coming along today, it was a nice ride for such a gloomy day. All of this rain has helped to get the trees budding and the grasses growing. Everything is starting to look very green, something we all look forward too as the spring air graces us with it presence.
