Day 24-

Our 16th President Abraham Lincoln-

As long as I can remember my favorite President has been Abraham Lincoln. He fought for causes that he believed in, including working to abolish slavery. I read my first Lincoln biography when I was in the forth grade and I was hooked. Abraham was born February 12, 1809 to Nancy and Thomas Lincoln. Both of my brothers-in-law, Mike and Glenn share a birthday with our 16th president.

Lincoln was born into poverty but notwithstanding he self educated and became a lawyer, a whig party leader, and a US congressman from Illinois. Pretty impressive for the son of a poor farmer! He lived a very hard life having lost several siblings and his mother at a young age. He tragically lost two of his own sons when they were very young, forever changing him. President Lincoln suffered from clinical depression for most of his life.

Lincoln was elected to the Presidency and served from 1861-1865. On April 15, 1865 he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth 42 days into his second term. Following his death, Lincoln was portrayed as the liberator of the slaves, savior of the union and a martyr for the cause of freedom.

My brother in law Mike, an artist and historian, has written several books but my favorite book is The Lincoln Funeral, I love it!  The book follows the Lincoln funeral as it makes it way across the US after his death. A lot of work and thought went into this book and we couldn't be more proud. His books are available on Amazon (a little plug here for Mike!)

Both Art and I have a love for Lincoln. In our home we have a dedicated Lincoln hallway. We have many books, prints and memorabilia that we have collected along the way.
Lincoln left the greatest gift and legacy behind, he saved the union and issued the emancipation proclamation to abolish slavery in the US. Again, pretty impressive considering his humble beginnings.

Until tomorrow- Be Safe
